The Last Mile Challenge
Labour Shortage in the Hong Kong Courier Industry

Courier is one of the four pillar industries in Hong Kong.

Overview
  • 1.17 billion HKD gross surplus in 2015, 51% growth over 2005.
  • Employed 13,156 people in 416 companies in 20151.
  • In June 2016 – June 2017, the monthly vacancies numbered over 2502 – indicating a consistent shortfall in manpower.
  • The Postal and Courier Services Industry is estimated continue to thrive beyond 2021, with sales growing at 13% annually.

Grows along e-commerce in Hong Kong
  • The value of transactions completed via e-com for companies (not including individuals) in 2014 was 4,006 hundred million HKD, 136 times of the 1998’s.
  • Retail on internet is expected to grow at 16.1% annually, well into 2021.

Benefits from e-commerce Development in Mainland China
E-com esp. cross-border transactions are developing aggressively. Sale of 14 trillion USD is expected in 2018, 130% increase from 2015. Hong Kong is benefited by,
  • Serving as a transit point between vendors and customers
  • Handling e-commerce clearance

Consolidation Continues
In the past few years, smaller companies are crowded out or acquired by the larger ones. The situation is reported associating with higher operating cost and lower profit margin.
The number of establishments/ companies is decreasing while the number of employees is increasing in the period of 2009 – 2016, meaning less number of companies but larger in size.
